Structural Engineering Services

Builders, architects, and designers: plan review and stamping is the core of what I do. Send me the structural set and I'll review it and seal it, usually entirely from your drawings. Fixed fee, one round, and you deal directly with the engineer whose stamp is on it. Email travis@thewallguy.com.

For homeowners, the next lines down are wall removals, beams and headers, decks, dormers, and additions. Every one of them ends in the same deliverable: stamped, permit-ready engineering from a licensed Connecticut PE. If you're not sure which category your project fits, call me at (860) 519-6009 and describe it. Takes five minutes and I'll tell you what you actually need, even if the answer is that you don't need me.

Plan Review and Stamping. For builders, architects, and designers who need a structural set reviewed and sealed by a Connecticut PE. Usually runs entirely from your drawings.
Load-Bearing Wall Removal. Open up a kitchen or combine rooms. Beam sizing, posts, connections, and the stamped letter your building department requires.
Beams, Headers, and Posts. Sagging beams, garage door headers, undersized members. Sized for the actual loads with connection details your contractor can build.
Decks and Porches. Ledgers, footings, and framing that pass inspection the first time. For homeowners and the contractors who build them.
Dormers and Roof Restructuring. Shed and gable dormers, ridge beams, and the roof framing changes that make attic space livable.
Additions and Bump-Outs. Framing and foundation design for added space, including second stories.
Framing Repair and Retrofit. Rot, notched joists, overspanned members, sistering. Fixes designed for what is actually there.
Structural Inspections and Letters. When a bank, insurer, or building official wants a PE's opinion in writing on a specific structural condition. Sagging floors, storm damage, framing questions.
Foundation Evaluations. Written evaluation letters only, including pyrrhotite concerns in affected towns. I do not design foundation repairs, and active settlement or movement usually belongs with a geotechnical or foundation repair specialist first.
Light Commercial Alterations. Small alterations to existing buildings: storefronts and tenant fit-outs. Not new construction, multi-story, or ground-up shells.

How Every Project Works

Call, text, or email and describe the project. For homeowners, you get one fixed price on that first call, before any work starts, and we put the site visit on the calendar while we're on the phone: Saturdays or weekday evenings. Your confirmation includes an upload link so you can send photos ahead of the visit. I take my own measurements and verify the structure in person, then run the analysis at my desk and walk you and your contractor through the options. Your stamped letter typically follows within a few business days of the visit. That one price covers the job start to finish, including any revisions the building department asks for. Closed Sundays.

Design professionals and repeat contractors: plan review and some projects can run entirely from your documents, on a separate rate sheet. Email them over and I'll tell you what I can do.

What I'm Not Currently Taking

So nobody wastes a phone call: I am not currently taking pre-purchase or home-inspection opinions for buyers, litigation support or expert witness work, or commercial projects beyond small alterations to an existing building. Foundation work is limited to written evaluation letters. If your project is one of these, call anyway and I'll point you toward someone who does it.
